The auger is the screw that carries pellets from the hopper to the firepot. If it stops, the fire goes out and the grill either fails to light or slowly loses temperature mid-cook. Traeger, Pit Boss, Weber and other pellet grills all use the same basic design, so the same checks apply. Work through them in order, from the simplest to the most involved, and always unplug the grill before reaching into the hopper or auger.

Symptoms and likely causes

Start by noticing exactly what happens. The table links common symptoms to their most likely causes.

Check the pellets and hopper first

Pellets that get damp swell, crumble and turn to sawdust. In the auger tube that sawdust packs hard, like cement, and stops the screw. Rain getting into the hopper, a grill left uncovered or pellets stored in a damp shed are the usual reasons.

Pellets can also bridge in the hopper, forming an arch over the auger opening so the screw turns but nothing falls in. This is more common with long pellets or a nearly empty hopper. Stir the pellets with a gloved hand once the grill is unplugged.

  1. 1

Switch off and unplug the grill.

  2. 2

Empty the hopper using the clean-out door if fitted.

  3. 3

Look at the pellets: they should be hard, shiny and snap cleanly. Throw away any that are soft, swollen or crumbly.

  4. 4

Vacuum dust from the bottom of the hopper and around the auger opening.

  5. 5

Refill with fresh, dry pellets and try the prime or feed function described in your manual.

Clearing a jammed auger

If the motor hums but the screw does not move, the tube is probably packed. Remove the grates, drip tray and baffle so you can reach the firepot. With the grill unplugged, clear loose debris from the firepot and the end of the auger tube. Some makers advise reversing the auger by hand or removing the motor to free the screw; others prefer you contact support. Follow your manual exactly, as procedures differ between brands.

Never put fingers into the auger opening while the grill is plugged in. If you cannot clear the jam easily, contact the maker's support team or a service agent rather than forcing parts.

Note:Always unplug the grill before touching the hopper, auger or firepot. The auger can start without warning on some controllers, and the igniter and firepot can stay hot for a long time after use.

Motor, fuse and controller faults

If the tube is clear but the motor makes no sound, the fault is electrical. Some grills have a fuse on the controller board that blows after a jam, so a jam can cause a second fault. Others have a shear pin designed to break under load to protect the motor. Your manual will say whether either applies and whether you can replace it yourself.

Auger motors and controllers are standard spare parts from most makers. If you are not comfortable with wiring, use an authorised service agent. Our pellet grill not getting hot guide covers fan and igniter faults that can look similar.

Preventing auger problems

Keep the grill covered and the hopper lid closed when not in use. Store pellets in a sealed bin indoors or in a dry shed. Empty the hopper if the grill will sit unused for more than a few weeks, especially over winter. Use the grill's shut-down cycle rather than pulling the plug, so pellets in the firepot burn out cleanly and do not smoulder back up the tube.

Clean the firepot and hopper regularly; our how to clean a pellet grill guide gives a schedule. If you are buying, our best pellet grills guide notes hopper clean-out doors and covers.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my pellet grill auger not turning? The most common cause is a jam from damp, swollen pellets. A failed motor, blown fuse or controller fault is next most likely.

How do I know if pellets are damp? Good pellets are hard and glossy and snap cleanly. Damp ones are dull, soft, crumbly or swollen.

Can I run the auger without the fire lit? Most controllers have a prime or feed mode for filling the tube. Check your manual for how to use it.

Is an auger motor expensive to replace? It is a common spare part. Prices vary by brand, so check the maker's parts list or a service agent.
