Our verdict
The Q 1200N suits couples, small balconies and anyone who moves the grill. The Q 2200N is the better buy for a family that cooks for four or more on a fixed patio spot.
The Weber Q is the compact gas BBQ most UK buyers consider first for a small garden, balcony-sized patio or caravan. Within the current N range, the Q 1200N and Q 2200N are the two models most often weighed against each other. They share the same design ideas: one burner, a cast aluminium body, porcelain-enamelled cast iron grates and a domed lid. Cooking space and power
The Q 2200N's 57 x 41 cm grate works out at about 2,340 cm², which is roughly 80% more area than the Q 1200N. In practice that is the difference between cooking for a couple with friends and cooking for a family of four or five in one go. The extra 1.17 kW of burner power helps the larger body heat up and recover after you lift the lid.
Both have a single burner, so true two-zone cooking is limited. You can still cook indirectly by lowering the heat and using a roasting tray, and the domed lids leave room for a small chicken. Size, weight and moving it
At 19 kg, the Q 1200N on its stand is easy to shift around a patio, and without the stand the grill body is light enough to take camping. The Q 2200N at 34 kg is a two-person lift and really a garden grill that stays put.
Both stands fold the grill to a sensible working height and keep the footprint small. Measure your space with side tables open, and leave room around the grill for heat and for opening the lid fully.
Think about storage too. A Q on its stand can be wheeled into a shed or garage once cool and with the gas bottle disconnected and stored outside. Gas and safety
In the UK, Q models are usually run from a propane bottle through the correct regulator and hose, and some bundles also allow small disposable cartridges. Note:Use a Weber Q in the open air only, never inside a tent, caravan, garage or enclosed balcony. Leak-test connections with soapy water each time you change the bottle.
Which should you buy?
Buy the Q 1200N if you cook for two to four people, have a small patio or balcony where gas is allowed, or want something you can also take away in the car. Buy the Q 2200N if you regularly cook for four or more, want room for larger roasts and the grill will live in one place.
