This version of the Q 1200N comes on a compact stand, turning Weber's small tabletop barbecue into a freestanding grill for a balcony or a small patio. It suits couples and households of up to four who do not have a table to spare. The stand is the reason to choose it: you get the Q's cast iron grate and high-dome lid at a working height, in a footprint barely wider than a chair.

In its favour

  • Only 45.5 cm deep on its stand, so it sits close to a wall or fence.
  • The redesigned high-dome lid has 46% more room underneath than earlier models, says Weber.
  • Front-facing knobs, electronic ignition and a lid thermometer are all named in the listing.

Good to know

  • A 1,290 cm² grill is tight when cooking for more than four people at once.
  • One 2.93 kW burner limits how much you can cook directly over heat at the same time.

Our take

Grill and lid

Weber fits a 2.93 kW high-efficiency burner under porcelain-enamelled cast iron grates of 1,290 cm², which the listing says fits up to nine burgers. The high-dome lid is redesigned to give 46 percent more space underneath than earlier models, so a roast or a whole bird fits without the lid pressing down.

Front-facing temperature knobs, a lid thermometer and electronic ignition complete the controls.

The compact stand

Weber says the stand adds stability without taking up extra space. Overall, the grill is listed at about 105 cm wide with tables, 45.5 cm deep and 109 cm high, and weighs 19 kg. That is only a couple of kilos more than the tabletop version, so it is still easy to shift around a patio.

Side tables are included for plates and tools, and assembly is required.

Limits of a small single burner

At 2.93 kW, this is the lowest output among the gas grills in Weber's compared range. For two to four people it is plenty, but a full grate of cold food will take a little longer to recover. A larger crowd will mean cooking in batches.

The manufacturer warranty is up to five years, which is reassuring on a grill that will likely stay outdoors through the seasons.

Compared with the bigger Q and Spirit

The Weber Q 2200N on its compact stand steps up to a 57 x 41 cm grill and 4.1 kW, at 34 kg. The Weber Spirit E-210 adds a second burner and a 2,346 cm² grill on a 47 kg cart. The Weber Traveler offers a 63 x 34 cm grill on a folding trolley that suits trips away.

Verdict

The Q 1200N with stand is ideal for a balcony or a small patio where two to four people eat and there is no spare table. If you regularly feed six, the Weber Q 2200N gives a much larger grate on a similar stand, and if you want two-zone cooking, the Weber Spirit E-210 is worth the extra space.
